Is it Normal to Be Scared to Get Married?

Many engaged folks ask, “Is it Normal to Be Scared to Get Married?”

Let me tell you- if it wasn’t- this website wouldn’t exist!

The truth is that it is totally normal and the fact that you are reading this right now, means other people are too.

Let’s compare…

Were you scared on your first day of kindergarten?

Were you scared to play in your first big game or performance?

Were you scared to go off to college?

Were you scared starting a new job?

Were you scared moving to a new city?

If you answered yes to any of these, then it only makes sense that you’re scared to get married.

What do all of these questions have in common?

That they are all from a change.

And marriage is a change. It’s a transition. Even if you’ve known your partner for years, it’s still a ‘change.’ If it wasn’t, then why would anyone get married?

And guess what? Change is scary. And it is totally normal to be scared of change. We as humans like routines. We like things that stay the same and how we know how they’ll turn out. Marriage is not that. It is ever changing and a lifetime commitment. What if you were starting a new job knowing that is the only job you’ll ever have? You’d be scared, right?

So of course it’s normal to feel scared about getting married. There is absolutely nothing wrong with you.

But I also don’t want you to be scared either- I want you to get down that aisle and have the best life and marriage ever. For real, it just warms my heart.

I’ll tell you that I am a wedding photographer and so I am present on a lot of wedding days with brides and grooms right before they walk down the aisle. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to calm down a bride on her wedding day- because she was scared.

And guess what- later that day after conquering her fears- she had the best day ever and rode off in the getaway car without a worry in the world.

That is why I love helping people through Engaged and Anxious. Except I’ll give ya’ll my pep talk way before the wedding day instead.

So if you’re feeling scared to get married, first know that yes, it is normal. And secondly, if you need some help getting through your fear of getting married, I’m here to help. Check out my resources tab for some more help and we’ll get you down that aisle.

Here for ya!
